How it works
Words are counted using your browser's built-in language rules, so contractions like "it's" count once and other languages work too. Characters are counted the way you see them: an emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
Reading time uses an average of 238 words a minute; speaking time 140 words a minute.
Your text never leaves your device and isn't saved: refresh the page and it's gone.
Worked example
A 1,500-word essay takes about 6.3 minutes to read and 10.7 minutes to read aloud.
Questions
Do spaces count as characters?
On most platforms, yes: X (Twitter), SMS and meta descriptions all count spaces. Both figures are shown.
Why is my text message split into several?
One SMS holds 160 plain characters. Emoji and some accented characters switch the message to a format that holds only 70, so long messages are sent in parts.
How long should a meta description be?
Google typically shows about 150–160 characters. It's measured in pixels, so treat 160 characters as a guide, not a hard limit.
