How it works
To add VAT, multiply the price before VAT by the rate: at 20%, £100 + £20 VAT = £120.
To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate (1.2 at 20%), rather than taking 20% off: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100, so the VAT was £20. Taking 20% off £120 would wrongly give £96.
Rates last checked November 2026. Countries also have reduced and zero rates for some goods; check the official source for what applies to yours.
Worked example
A UK invoice for £450 plus VAT at 20%: VAT is £450 × 0.2 = £90, total £540. A receipt for £540 including VAT: £540 ÷ 1.2 = £450 before VAT.
Questions
What is the UK VAT rate?
The standard rate is 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to things like home energy and children’s car seats, and 0% to most food and children’s clothes.
Why not just take 20% off to remove VAT?
Because the VAT was 20% of the smaller, pre-VAT price. Removing it means dividing by 1.2, which takes off 16.67% of the total.
Does this work for GST or sales tax?
Yes for GST (Australia, New Zealand, Canada federal) and any single-rate tax: pick the country or enter your own rate. US sales tax is set by states and cities, so enter the local rate.
