How it works

The tip is the bill × the tip percentage. Add it to the bill and divide by the number of people for each share. With round up on, each share is rounded up to the next whole pound, and the extra goes to the tip.

Worked example

A £60 bill with a 12.5% tip: £60 × 0.125 = £7.50 tip, £67.50 in total, £33.75 each for two people. Rounded up, that's £34 each and a £8 tip.

Questions

How much should I tip in the UK?

10–15% is usual in restaurants if service isn't already included. Check the bill: many add a 12.5% "discretionary service charge", and you don't need to tip again on top.

Is a service charge compulsory?

In the UK an optional (discretionary) service charge can be removed if you weren't happy with the service; tell the staff. A compulsory charge must be made clear before you order.

What about tipping in the US?

15–20% is expected in US restaurants, since servers' wages rely on tips. Tipping is usually calculated on the bill before sales tax.
