How it works
The sale price is the original × (1 − discount). An extra discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 25% off and then an extra 10% off is 32.5% off in total, not 35%.
To find the % off, divide the saving by the original price.
Worked example
£80 with 25% off: £80 × 0.75 = £60, a £20 saving. An extra 10% off that: £60 × 0.9 = £54, 32.5% off overall.
Questions
Are two discounts added together?
No, the second applies to the reduced price. 50% off then 50% off again leaves a quarter of the price (75% off), not free.
Is a "was" price always genuine?
UK rules say reference prices must be genuine and not misleading, but it's worth checking price history elsewhere before deciding it's a bargain.
