Getting today’s rates…

Exchange rates: European Central Bank, via Frankfurter.

How it works

Rates are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, published around 4pm (Central European Time) on working days. Every currency is quoted against the euro, so converting pounds to dollars goes via the euro: (amount ÷ GBP rate) × USD rate.

These are mid-market reference rates: banks, cards and exchange bureaux add a margin or fee, so the amount you actually get will be a bit lower. Rates are fetched straight from your browser (Frankfurter, a free service publishing the ECB data) and the last ones are kept on your device so this works offline.

Worked example

If 1 euro buys 0.83 pounds and 1.16 dollars, then £100 is 100 ÷ 0.83 × 1.16 ≈ $139.76.

Questions

Why is my bank’s rate different?

Banks and card providers usually add a margin to the mid-market rate, and may charge a fee too. Compare their rate with this one to see how much the margin is.

How often do the rates change?

The ECB publishes one set a day on working days. Markets move all the time, so rates during the day can differ slightly.

Why isn’t my currency listed?

The ECB publishes rates for about 30 major currencies. Others aren't included in this data.
